Mayan ruins of Tulum

On Sunday 5th May, we had a break and visited the Mayan ruins of Tulum. This is a beautiful archaeological site of an ancient Mayan walled city on cliffs overlooking the Caribbean sea (Tulum is the Mayan word for wall) that is recorded to have been occupied from around AD 1200 until the Spanish arrived in the 16th century.

The dazzling blue ocean along the Mayan riviera is due to the fact that there are no rivers feeding into it. And because of the lack of nutrients flowing into the sea, there is also less animal life along this part of the ocean.
